Hunters Needed in the Eradication Zone The following is an e-mail from Jeffrey Decker, a student at UW Stevens Point, who is trying to organize hunts in the Eradication Zone to help harvest deer. The information should be self-explanatory. We appreciate any assistance you can provide. Please contact Jeffrey directly.
Hello. I’m writing to find hunters interested in traveling to Black Earth to hunt deer in the CWD Eradication Zone. I have secured permission from two landowners, so everyone who goes would not need a license and would be free to bag as many whitetail as he or she can. The DNR feels Chronic Wasting Disease is such a threat that they are allowing landowners and their associates to take as many deer as they can, with very loose regulations. I hope you agree that this disease demands constant attention from state hunters. Presently the only action that most experts agree will immediately slow the disease’s spread is a constant, intense hunting of the contaminated area. Please let me know if you or others you know would be interested. We’re hopeful that a lot of hunters will come out and that we’ll be able to harvest a large number of deer. Since there is no one group sponsoring these hunts, for now it will be an informal gathering of responsible hunters. We could meet and write as needed to establish trust before we ever enter the forest. The land is very hilly, as is the whole area. My friends and family have now hunted this area six times, and there are many deer there. Please consider this chance to help the purity of the deer herd and possibly the safety of everyone who will consume deer. The land we went on, and where you all can go, too, is just west of Black Earth. You’ll need to visit the landowner first and sign a form and receive special permits. Besides this landowner permit, YOU DO NOT NEED A HUNTING LICENSE. He has an endless supply of earn-a-buck tags, and a limited supply of buck tags. If you are interested in going, just contact me and I can tell you how to contact two landowners who have said we can hunt their land. Here’s an aerial photo of one of the areas we can go.
